Ask us to turn off our computers and throw them away and you would most probably have a riot on your hands in most households today as they have literally become the can’t live without gadget of the century.

If you are employed as a computer support support technician this day and age, I don’t think there would be any reason that you would be without a job, and the situation can only get better in reality

If I look at my own household I think things are starting to get out of hand because not only do we have the normal clutch of games machines, play station, wii, Nintendo game and DS (I keep resisting the urge to go to mad) but we have our own computer network with three Pc’s and a laptop all connected.

Some would say that this is an extravagance, but when you have a couple of kids they need to have access to technology to grow their skills for when they go to work in a few years time (although they play a lot of games as well of course).

Equally when I visit other families I see the same thing there as well so I think there is simply no getting away from computers ever again.

Computers make life go a little bit smoother and routine tasks a tad simpler and lets face it we all hanker after as much convenience as possible but what about the internet and security factor?

These two concepts seem to go hand in hand. It’s difficult to imagine cyberspace without a little risk but do you know what you’re or your kids are really exposing on the web?

So what about the whole identity fraud and security issue with the net? Are you perhaps worried about your social security number and/or bank transactions being viewed by a third party.

Identity theft is becoming an increasing problem and we are constantly hearing in the news about hard drives turning up on e-bay or second hand computers being sold full of data, but this is only one aspect of the problem.

Equally the spreading of viruses is on the increase despite better anti virus software.

Viruses will never cease to exist as long as PCs are around. I continually hear my friends and family members whine about computer viruses, but they are still happy to send unknown e-mails back and forth to each other full of links to goodness knows where.

Start your child’s internet security and antivirus education as early as possible because if the parents won’t listen, you’ll have a tough time convincing a teenager.

You probably have at least one email system that you use regularly. Most people have a hotmail account, yahoo account or some form of online email client that they use for their personal use.

You probably do not use that same email for work because it is not as easy to use as some email programs such as Outlook. You want to be able to access your pop3 mail server immediately. If you are setting up your outgoing mail server, then you are going to need a brief rundown on what it does and how to correct any problems.

outgoing mail server
The mail server software is actually called an SMTP. SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Sure it sounds complicated, but in reality the mail server SMTP is quite easy to understand. It is responsible for sending your emails. It is what tells the program how to send and receive the emails for that particular program.

The exchange email server for Windows is going to be a lot different than what it is for the Linux mail server because it is a different operating system. But you probably will not be setting the server up yourself, simply using it to transmit and receive your messages.

Make sure to get certain information correct. Your POP3 mail server will have a distinct look of mail.blank.com. You simply type in the information you were given about your incoming and outgoing mail server to set the account up.

There are two places that need to be filled in. One is the outgoing and the other is the incoming mail server. If the two are different, then you will want to make sure you know the difference between the two or you will not be able to send emails or receive emails until the incoming and outgoing mail server is fixed.

pop3 mail server
Being cut off from the rest of the world can be a huge pain and can be extremely frustrating. If you do not know how to fix the problem, then you may be better off contacting your IT department for help.

If you are setting up a home account, then you can always use your email program’s help section to find the answer to your problem.

At some point and time you will need computer help. It might be a virus you just can not remove yourself or your computer might be slower then a snail.

I do computer repair for a living and service a local market in Northern Colorado. The number one issue we get called out for is spyware and viruses. This is our bread and butter. On average the cost runs around 178 for onsite service. The next most popular service we perform is a system tune-up. This runs 129.

When selecting a computer repair company you should always call around. I run a small computer repair shop. Many people like that because if they have an issue they can ask for me by name. Most big box retailers switch through people so fast that it is hard to track down the person that repaired your computer.

You are not forced to have someone on site to repair your computer. Thanks to new technology many companies now do online computer repair. Places like this XP Repair site specialize in remote computer repair for XP and Vista. This is a great way to get your computer repaired right away and with out paying those higher prices for an in home tech. This sure beats hauling your computer across town and waiting a week for it to get fixed. This price is less online because no one needs to come out and the technician can multitask and get more done. This really helps to lower the prices.

When selecting a company regardless of what way you go, you should always ask for the prices up front. There is nothing worse then hearing they charge 100 bucks an hour and you end up with a 400 dollar bill. Many places now charge by the service. Ask about the prices right away and get an estimate on the repair.

You should also check and ensure the company offers some kind of guarantee. For instance my small computer repair company has a 30 day guarantee on all services and a 90 day guarantee on workmanship. This means that if the spyware or virus comes back we will not charge them again for removal. It’s rare but when it comes to spyware sometimes a threat is not detected until a few days after the removal.

Bottom line, ask questions until you are happy with what you hear.

Spyware is a very significant security risk. If you have spyware on your computer, you need to get rid of it quick! What this malicious software does is spy on you, and use the information it gathers to send to a remote computer belonging to the spyware designers. On this remote computer, vast quantity of personal data is collected, including passwords, email addresses, and even details like online banking log ons and credit card numbers. The amount of damage that can be caused to you by this software is enormous!

spyware detection

When spyware installs itself onto your computer, most of the time you will know nothing about it. Some of the more ambitious spyware designers use the infection of your computer as an excuse to show you ads, but many other varieties of spyware are completely invisible.

However, there are signs that you can observe, such as changes to your Windows settings, new user accounts appearing, a lot of hard disk thrashing and a slow down of your computer. You may also notice that the Internet Explorer seems to be less responsive - this is as a result of the added network traffic caused by the spyware.

The best way to detect spyware is with special anti-spyware software.

spyware removing software

As soon as you have become aware of the software, you need to delete it. While this can be done manually, the uninstall procedures are usually quite complicated, with lots of different steps needed. This is because the spyware is designed to resist deletion, which means that you need to outsmart the designers. What’s more, the procedure will be different for each and every type of infection - there are many tens of thousands of different strains of spyware out there!

This is why so many users prefer to use purpose made anti-spyware software to remove the infections.

Spyware Bot

Spyware Stop is anti-spyware software that removes spyware from your computer, and keeps it safe from reinfection. It does this in 3 ways:

1 : It scans your computer and removes the threats that it finds there.

2 : It blocks new spyware from installing itself.

3 : It will alert you if any spyware starts running on your computer, and will then remove it.

This makes your computer completely safe!

Windows Vista is Microsoft’s latest and greatest operating system, probably destined to be with us for another 5 years so should you upgrade? Well the answer is literally yes and no.

Windows Vista depending on which version you buy will put a much greater strain on your Pc than Windows XP for example.

One piece of your hardware that will be affected will be you graphics. If you want to be using the aero features in Vista (if you’ve the right version) then this needs to be up to the job other wise it will drastically affect your Pc’s performance.

Just upgrading a card is not an option for many users as they will have an older AGP based motherboard and whilst you can still buy these cards (just), they will not give you the best performance and it can be a waste of money.

If you have a computer that is more than a couple of years old , then think carefully before upgrading. You may be better sticking with what you have for another year or so and then getting a new PC with Vista pre-installed.

Check your spec with your computer repairer before upgrading to be on the safe side, a computer repair call out should not be too expensive and your repairer can check your system at the same time.
